James P. O’Connor, JD, LLM, AEP
Mr. O’Connor joined AVZ in 2005. He was promoted to Principal in 2007 and was welcomed as a member of the Partner Team in 2015. His practice primarily involves federal and state tax research/planning, tax audits/appeals, trust and estate tax matters, and estate/succession planning. Mr. O’Connor received a BBA (Accounting) (Cum Laude) from Hofstra University in 1980, a Juris Doctor degree (Cum Laude) from Brooklyn Law School in 1988, and a Master of Laws (LLM) in Taxation from New York University in 1992 and he is also an Accredited Estate Planner (AEP). He began his professional career as a Revenue Agent with the Internal Revenue Service in 1981. After graduating from Brooklyn Law School, he worked for law firms in Garden City and New York City, practicing primarily in the areas of taxation, bankruptcy, real estate and trusts/estates.
Mr. O’Connor is a member of the New York State and Suffolk County Bar Associations, the United States District Courts/Bankruptcy Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, and the United States Tax Court. He is currently a Co-Chair of the Suffolk County Bar Association’s Tax Committee, President and board member of the Nassau County Estate Planning Council, and a director and finance committee chair of the St. Vincent De Paul Society of the Diocese of Rockville Centre.
