Mr. Shillingsford has over 20 years of professional experience in accounting, auditing, and taxation for closely held businesses.  He advises clients on financial reporting matters regarding newly issued accounting and auditing pronouncements, tax planning and compliance, internal controls, management advisory services, strategic planning, as well as business succession planning.  His wide-ranging client base includes manufacturing, wholesale, distribution, professional service-based companies, technology, and employee benefit plans.

John is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants and the Pennsylvania State Society of Certified Public Accountants.  He serves as President of the Board of Directors for the NYSSCPA Suffolk Chapter.  John is also a Committee Member for the Members in Industry and Management of an Accounting Practice for the NYSSCPA.  He is on the Maurer Foundation’s Golf Committee and is the Executive Committee Member of the Commack Youth Soccer League. John is a registered representative who has passed the FINRA Series 7 and 66 exams.  He also holds a New York State Life and Health Insurance License.

John joined AVZ as a manager in 1996, was promoted to Principal in 2004, and to Partner in 2007.  Internally, he is a member of the Firm’s Quality Control Committee where he is responsible for the Firm’s Peer Review, updating the Firm on newly issued accounting and auditing pronouncements as well as the Firm’s internal monitoring program.  He is an accomplished author, writing various articles based on his expertise.

John received his Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania in 1985.
